After Griffith left the Mayberry program, he talked about how he wanted to start giving families some alternative to Disney pictures as family fare. Angel In My Pocket, in which he played a minister, was supposed to be the first of three movies built around him, but after it did poorly at the box office, Universal killed the rest of the project. Angel had a similar dynamic to the Andy Griffith Show. Jerry Van Dyke, as the reverend brother, got the belly laughs (making moonshine in the church basement, for instance) while Griffith had a more understated role. Griffith had the power to give himself a flashier role, and it is to his credit that he was not threatened by characters that upstaged him. (Jack Dodson Sprague in Mayberry one of the other cast members.) The movie had more meat than most Disney movies, with Griffith character becoming angry at the Guess Belt Mens selfish people in town at one point.
He may have suffered from the perpetual fate of the straight man. Or it may have been the Clark Gable problem didn win an Oscar for Gone with the Wind, it believed, because people thought he was playing himself and there was no work involved.

Griffith had quite a range. I loved listening to the albums of his night club comedy, from before the TV show. (One of them was used in an early Mayberry episode.) Some of them were pretty innovative. In one routine the hit song on the Shade was played, the music being stopped at key points for him to comment on the behavior of the two lovers.
for the past couple months. For him he was real and brand new. Clark wants to go to North Carolina to see Andy statue.

With the exception of a nasty episode on gypsies, the Andy Griffith Show was, I think, one of the best pop culture influences of our time. Swagger and bluster were made a subject of jokes, gentleness and decency were honored. My favorite episode of the show dealt with Opie telling tales about a man he met, Mr. McBeevee, who walks around on the top of trees, has a silver hat, and so on. Andy thinks it a product of his imagination until Opie comes home with a quarter from the man. Opie can explain it to Andy satisfaction and when Opie doesn come clean, Andy decides it time for a whipping. In the end, he decides that although he doesn believe Opie story, he does trust him and decides to have faith in him against all evidence. There is no whipping and Andy later learns that Mr. McBeevee is a power line repairman.
I remember seeing Griffith as a villain in a movie, Crime of Innocence, in which he played a harsh judge whose viciousness toward teen offenders really made the viewer hate him far cry from Andy Taylor or Ben Matlock.
In the 1957 movie A Face in the Crowd, Griffith gave a blockbuster performance as a manipulative rural drifter, Lonesome Rhodes, who stumbles into television, becomes enormously popular and accumulates political power while abusing the people around him until his contempt for the public is exposed by an open mike. It supposedly based on Arthur Godfrey, who had fired one of his performers on the air and engaged in other erratic behavior. The performance was not fully appreciated at the time (the New York Times reviewer seemed to think that his performance overpowered the other actors in the movie, and that the device for bringing Lonesome down at the end of the movie was too easy) but has since become recognized as a tour de force.
