The federal money is provided by AmeriCorps, and funds are allocated by state agencies. In Tennessee that agency is Volunteer Tennessee.
"If you drive around right now, you see kids sitting on the corners not engaging in academics," said Dawn Reese, director of youth development.
$5,000 a year, and 85 percent of Cayce residents receive some form of public assistance. Less than a mile away, at Kirkpatrick elementary school, half of all third graders cannot read at grade level.
Celebrating its 20th year of service, AmeriCorps has provided millions of dollars to nonprofits since it was created under the Clinton administration. With this year's grants, more than $4 million will flow into Tennessee for 18 programs that employ more than 1,000 AmeriCorps members.
Thirty kids remain on the waiting list for the summer camp, the maximum allowed. Reese said more would put their name down if they could.

AmeriCorps funds help Nashville nonprofits
The THRIVE camp helps grade school children engage with their peers in ways that could help them in their long term development.

Since 2010, AmeriCorps has funneled more than $20 million to 23 groups across Tennessee, in areas ranging from medicine to home building to education. Rather than dollars, the impact is better measured by improvements in the lives of kids such as those at Martha O'Bryan, an influential nonprofit that works with thousands of children, primarily in East and North Nashville.

camp, which costs $50, an application fee that can be waived if need is a problem.
For THRIVE the money helps the six week summer camp care for 110 kids four days a week. Reese said that without Americorps her THRIVE staff would be cut by two thirds, forcing her to put many kids back on the streets.

"Her mom was 14 when she had her, and just watching her grow as a freshman, she came to us and she was making a lot of C's and B's," Wright said. "By the end of the year she was coming up every day to eat lunch with us because we kind of created that kind of student mentor relationship. She made over a 3 point. She raised her GPA by over a point in one semester."
Behind them lay a summer day camp called THRIVE, a program that mixes art, music and more with academic work for students from Gucci Belts Gold the Cayce neighborhood where poverty and crime have sometimes held them back. A project of the Martha O'Bryan Center, the camp is supported by AmeriCorps, a federal grant program that lends support to nonprofits engaged in community improvement.
