An umpire's tribute
In a game at Candlestick Park, Mays rounded second and slid into third base trying to beat a throw. Jocko Conlan, another Hall Gucci Belt Brown of Fame umpire, called Mays out.
the majors in 1962, which meant that the umpire saw the Giants center fielder in his wondrous prime. Mays hit .304 with 49 home runs and 141 RBI during that '62 season.
"And Jocko very slowly looked down at his hands and Willie realized what he had done. Willie just broke from there and ran directly to the first base base dugout, clear across the infield I never saw a player run so fast in all his life."
But of the Say Hey Kid, who turned 83 on Wednesday, there's nothing but good things to say. "Willie played the game because he loved it. Because of that, he had no time to argue with umpires,'' Harvey said in a phone interview.
In his book, released this spring, Harvey writes:
Ever Lived" zings a few Hall of Famers. His list of grievances includes Frank Robinson ("a pain in the ass"), Bob Gibson ("a snake") and Don Sutton ("a hell of a pitcher when he wasn't cheating.")
